Crisp sample environment

Kit available for experiments

The CRISP instrument has a standard set of sample environment equipment. Most of these are common to both reflectometers except the polarised neutron equipment which are only available to the CRISP instrument. 

Most of these have been built in house or been bought specifically for the use on the beam lines. In addition, a number of special pieces of equipment built by university teams have also been used. 

A brief summary of the key pieces of sample environment equipment is given below:

  • Oxford flow Cryostat which has a base temperature of 2.5K.
  • Magnet capable of applying an in-plane field of 3kOe.
  • NIMA trough with movable booms and surface tension read back. Standard procedure is to mount this on an anti-vibration table.
  • 5 liquid troughs mounted together with temperature control up to 80C. These are mounted on an anti-vibration table.
  • Pressure Cell for measuring condensed matter samples in gas pressures up to an atmosphere of pressure. Designed originally for Hydrogen loading. The cell contains a heater stage capable of 180C and a cooling jacket.
  • Heater stage cable of reaching 350C. This is in air and is used in conjunction with the CRISP magnet.
  • Goniometer - allows for custom user cell use.
  • An 3He analyzer is also available for off-specular scattering PNR measurements. This provides a reduced noise background then the standard CRISP analyzer. The local contact needs to be contacted before hand if this is a requirement due to increased setup time.

Users should contact Christy Kinane or their local contact if they are unsure which is most applicable to their experiment. For instance there is a much wider range of sample environment available from the sample environments group. In some circumstances especially with new types of experiments special equipment may have to be developed which should be done in close association with the CRISP instrument scientists.
