Science on MARI

The science program run on MARI is dominated by studies of magnetic excitations in powder and polycrystalline materials.

On average between 2011 and 2014, investigations of magnetic materials account for around two-thirds of the science program.  These studies include:

  • Magnetic excitations in unconventional superconductors
  • Heavy fermion metallic magnets
  • Frustrated and low-dimensional magnetism
  • Transition metal oxides (3d, 4d and 5d, spin-orbit coupling)

Of the remaining one-third of experiments, studies performed include

  • Phonon DOS in crystal systems and comparison with ab initio results
  • Chemical physics; DOS of chemical systems and chemical systems on substrates (i.e. catalysts) Excitations of H. Here MARI has a symbiotic relationship with TOSCA in that MARI offers far better Q resolution, and the ability to look at high energy excitations at relatively low Q.
  • Collective excitations in ionic liquids

The current scientific program on MARI has shifted decisively toward magnetic excitations – this emphasis was not originally the case for MARI for the first 15 years of its operation, when the majority of experiments performed were on liquids and disordered materials.
