OSIRIS is a spectrometer optimised for very low energy studies and long wavelength diffraction. These studies can provide information on relatively slow motions in materials such as diffusion in liquids and the movement of protons in batteries.

OSIRIS can be used as either a high-resolution, long-wavelength diffractometer or for high-resolution quasi/ inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy. For the purpose of description, OSIRIS may be considered as consisting of two coupled spectrometer components.

With regard spectroscopy, it is a high-flux (owing to the super-mirror guides) time-of-flight inverted geometry instrument such that neutrons scattered by the sample are energy analysed by means of Bragg scattering from a large-area pyrolytic graphite crystal-analyser array. The analyser is associated with 42-element 3He detectors.

With regard diffraction, OSIRIS has a diffraction detector bank consisting of 962 ZnS tubes oriented at 2θ ∼ 170°. OSIRIS offers a d-range between 0.8Å and ∼ 20Å at high resolution and high counting rates.
