Software developer for ISIS eScience systems

This placement will involve the specification, design, programming, testing deployment and documentation of software solutions to meet the data management needs of the facility and scientists.

The ISIS Facility of the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is the world's leading pulsed neutron and muon source, providing leading-edge research capabilities to an international community of research scientists.

Computing lies at the heart of many ISIS activities, from user office management, experiment planning, data acquisition through to data analysis and management.

ICAT enables large scientific facilities to link experiment proposals to raw (collected) data, through all the required analysis steps, to publications. This catalogue is then exposed as a fully searchable system to enable data citation and reuse. The system scales very well and is in use at several international facilities.

The release of ICAT4.2 provide many new opportunities for value-added services that can be provided on top of the basic infrastructure such as: integration with analysis programs, integration into the instrument data pipeline, links with High-Performance Computing (HPC) jobs and publication tracking.

This placement will involve the specification, design, programming, testing deployment and documentation of software solutions to meet the data management needs of the facility and scientists.

Specific aims over the next 12 months include the automated reduction and processing of ‘Xpress’ data, derived data cataloguing though integration with Mantid and work to better link proposals to publications and the data in ICAT.

We are very well equipped to execute this vision and the successful applicant would benefit from exposure to advanced programming methods in a real-world scientific environment.

Personal Skills and Attributes
