Cryofurnaces

In addition to the range of liquid Helium cryostats two ILL-type Cryofurnaces with 70mm diameter sample volumes and an operating temperature range of 1.5 - 600K are available.

A cryofurnace is a standard Cryostat with modified internal radiation shields and is constructed so that the rate of helium boil off is independent of the sample temperature. The resistive temperature control heater present in all cryostats has simply been increased in size so that higher temperatures of up to 300°C can be obtained. The cryogenic performance of the cryofurnace is identical to that of a standard ILL cryostat, and at furnace temperatures (above 300K) the response of the cryofurnace is faster than that of a normal furnace. Unfortunately our cryofurnaces have Vanadium tails which make them unsuitable for use on most of the inelastic instruments.
