Assistant Radioactive Waste Manager

ISIS is an intense pulsed neutron source providing beams of neutrons and muons to enable scientists to study the structure and properties of matter for the benefit of Science and Engineering in the UK and abroad. The Radiactive Waste Section is in the ISIS Health Physics & Facility Safety group at RAL. This section is responsible for the management of all the radiactive waste generated by the ISIS Spallation Neutron Source Facility and the former proton accelerators based at RAL.

About The Role:

The Assistant Radioactive Waste Manager (RWM) is required to follow the Environmental Agency permit and ensure compliance with all the HSE regulations. You will assist the RWM in areas such as; waste stream characterisation, inventory management and waste management and disposal strategy.

We are looking for an active and enthusiastic person, work team oriented, self motivated and with a pro-active attitude towards the different type of situations. A practical knowledge in radioactive waste and advanced computer skills will be very valuable for the daily work.

Potential work areas are:

Waste stream characterisation

  • organise waste characterisation
  • negotiate with potential waste receivers
  • aid the setting up of contracts for waste disposal
  • generate disposal and transport paperwork
  • update waste handling and other related procedures.

Inventory management

  • maintain data on the radioactive waste database
  • undertake stocktakes of areas
  • after gaining understanding of the ISIS neutron spallation source waste streams, aid waste generators to optimise waste removal
  • generate reports on holdings and discharges as required
  • aid the collation of data for the UK Waste Inventory and LLWR Ltd.'s waste arising's profiles
  • update waste handling and other related procedures.

Waste management and disposal strategy

  • support BAT and BPM studies
  • support waste storage and disposal strategy development
  • support waste processing strategy development
  • update waste handling and other related procedures
  • support permit variation applications.

Contacts and Communication:

  • report to and assist the Radioactive Waste Manager
  • work as part of teams in the group and across departments
  • work with scientists and engineers who are consigning radioactive waste and materials across site
  • interact with companies and agencies that characterise and receive waste.
