The Science and Technology Facilities Council brings strategic leadership to UK investments in large national and international research facilities, together with delivering world class science and technology. The Council operates some of the world’s most advanced facilities, such as ISIS.
ISIS is a source of pulsed neutrons and muons located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Oxford. The facility performs cutting-edge research into structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level. There is an opportunity for an engineer to join the ISIS Accelerator Division and work closely with fellow engineers and scientists, to provide operational, maintenance, upgrade and commissioning support for the pulsed power supplies used on the ISIS accelerator.
As part of the Electrical Engineering Group within the ISIS Accelerator Division, you will be a member of the Pulsed Power Section. The section is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a large number of pulsed power supplies as well as implementing the installation and commissioning of any replacement power supplies as part of the ISIS sustainability program.
Duties will include:
• Operation and maintenance of pulsed power supplies. • Fault finding and repair of the power supplies. • Installation and commissioning of new and replacement power supplies. • Liaising with other engineers responsible for cooling water systems, magnets and interlocks. • Liaising with power supply manufacturing companies.
Contacts and Communication:
• Internally you will communicate with the Electrical Engineering Group sections responsible for the magnet and interlock systems, other electrical engineers and mechanical design engineers working within ISIS, along with accelerator physicists and the ISIS operational crew.
• Externally you will be responsible for the management of power supply magnet manufacture contracts and will therefore have to liaise with manufacturers and component suppliers.
Personal Skills and Attributes:
• Experience in high voltage and high current pulsed power supplies. • Knowledge of pulsed power supply topologies. • Knowledge of thyratron valve technology. • Knowledge of solid state high speed power devices • Electrical power engineering. • Good fault finding skills • Good communication skills.
Any other Relevant Information:
You must be willing to work in radiation areas and be a classified radiation worker. You must also be able to work in areas containing high magnetic fields. The post will involve occasional travel within the UK and overseas. The post provides out of hours on-call support and you must be willing to be on-call.
