Electrical Support Technician

The Science and Technology Facilities Council brings strategic leadership to UK investments in large national and international research facilities, together with delivering world class science and technology. The Council operates some of the worlds most advanced facilities, such as ISIS.

ISIS is a source of pulsed neutrons and muons located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Oxford. The facility performs cutting-edge research into structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level. There are opportunities for an Electrical Support Technician to join the Operations Electrical Installations Section to provide support for much of the equipment associated with the smooth running of ISIS. The section is looking to recruit a practical electrical technician/ electrician who has served a fully recognised apprenticeship or is similarly qualified. It is also essential that they possess at least a level 3 City and Guilds in an Electrical discipline.

List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for a wide variety of activities including single phase light industrial installation work and larger scale three phase installations - all of which must comply with the 17th IEE Edition Wiring Regulations. The duties also include the installation and termination of multi-core and signal cabling for interlock systems, PLC-control and 19" panel wiring. You must possess good installation skills and attention to detail when installing conduit, SWA cable, trunking and cable tray.  The position is being offered as Band (C)

Personal Skills and Attributes

You must demonstrate an ability and willingness to work as part of a team, have strong communication skills with a proven ability in problem solving. You will work closely with visiting scientists and designers  following technical drawings.

There are also visiting apprentices in the workshop that will also need to be supervised during 3 monthly placements.

Any other Relevant Information

A full driving license is desirable and you must possess the ability to work at heights and in confined spaces when required to do so. Gaining classified radiation worker status is also required.
