Description of the Department
ISIS is the spallation neutron source located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK. Operation centres on a high intensity proton synchrotron, which accelerates protons for delivery onto a heavy metal target for neutron production. Efficient operation of the synchrotron requires a comprehensive knowledge of the proton beam dynamics. This beam information is obtained from a suite of beam diagnostic systems which provide information such as transverse beam position, beam intensity, beam profile and beam loss. The Diagnostics Section is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all beam diagnostic devices and their associated electrical, electronic and computer systems. In addition, the Diagnostics Section has an active programme for the development of novel diagnostic systems which often require unique electronic and electrical solutions.
List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities
The job holder will report to the Diagnostics (Electronics) Section Leader.
The graduate post on offer will involve the following;
• Designing and developing cutting edge (analogue and digital) electronic systems and associated electrical systems as required by the existing diagnostic programmes.
• Advising on the best electronic/electrical solutions taking into account budgetary and time constraints, while delivering optimum performance and reliability.
• Redeveloping or upgrading the remaining outdated electronic/electrical systems still used on ISIS as directed by the sustainability programme to ensure continued serviceability of these systems which are critical for the running of the ISIS accelerator.
• Gaining familiarity and proficiency working with electronics design and simulation tools.
In addition the successful candidate will be expected to assist with the installation and maintenance of all diagnostics systems within the synchrotron environment. This will require the candidate to become a classified radiation worker.
