STFC’s ISIS facility is a leading particle accelerator used to carry out research in the physical and life sciences. The facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level, and is the most productive research centre of its type in the world.
ISIS produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments. It supports a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists who use neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology.
About the role
We have vacancies for Mechanical Technicians working in the teams that support the production of neutrons, the operation of our suite of instruments and the operation of an extensive range of sample environment equipment.
In these roles you will develop expertise working with advanced materials, high speed machines, or operating high pressure, high temperature equipment.
ISIS operates 24/7, and staff will be expected to take on call-out duties when experiments or equipment fail and may also be asked to undertake overtime.
You will at times be required to work in a radiation area and with active components as a classified worker, and also be able to work in confined spaces and at height.
The role will require you to take responsibility for delivering assigned projects to completion and keep written records using Microsoft Office.
You should have served a certified apprenticeship in a relevant engineering discipline, qualified to ONC level or equivalent with HNC / HND or degree level beneficial.
In order to be considered for a Senior role candidates should demonstrate significant relevant experience, bringing expertise and skills that will benefit the team and allow you to perform consistently at an exceptionally high level.
Suitable candidates will be experienced hands on mechanical engineers with expertise in the assembly, operation and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment, demonstrating intuitive analytical, diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
You will have experience of technical leadership, along with workshop and machine tool familiarity and knowledge of workshop practices.
You should have an appreciation of mechanical engineering design and manufacturing techniques, demonstrate a high level of understanding of engineering drawings, be able to interpret and express technical concepts, and be familiar with the mechanical properties of materials. Any knowledge of CAD is also beneficial.
You must display effective interpersonal communications skills to work closely with facility users, be self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to apply your initiative.
A fixed crane driver qualification is also desirable.
