Polarized Neutron Sandwich Student

ISIS is a world leading facility for scientific research using neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy, with a strong scientific user programme and extensive international links. We support a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology, materials engineering and IT, as well as fundamental physics and chemistry investigations.

List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities:

We are seeking a Work-placement student to work for a period of 12 months within the ISIS Polarized Neutron Group.  He\she will work on the design of some polarized neutron instrumental components called “spin-flippers” which are required on one of the ISIS neutron spectrometers (LET).  The student will use finite-element modeling to test various types of spin-flipper under consideration.  This - together with considerations of technical maturity and cost - will decide the type of spin-flipper to be constructed.  It is expected that this task will involve construction of prototype flipper devices and testing on polarized beamlines.  Detailed modelling will follow, and then detailed design in collaboration with the assigned project engineer.

Full scientific and technical support will be available to the student for the period of the work placement.  It is anticipated that, towards the end of the work-placement period, experiment testing and commissioning of the finished device will take place.
