Postdoctoral Ressearcher - Total Scattering and Disordered Energy Materials
The ISIS neutron source at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is a leading facility for condensed matter research using neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy, with a strong scientific user programme and extensive international links.
The Crystallography Group at ISIS operates 7 neutron diffraction beamlines, performing world class powder and single crystal diffraction studies covering a broad range of academic and industrial research. In addition, the group has an extensive programme of developments to expand the application of the neutron diffraction technique into new areas, including advanced instrumentation, novel sample environment devices and innovative data analysis methods.
The importance of local structure and disorder within crystalline materials is being increasingly recognised as a key property of many functional materials. From negative thermal expansion to solid state amorphisation and from the 'nanoscale' problem to improved fuel cell technology, a clear picture of the local atomic structure is essential to understanding these phenomena, solving the associated problems and identifying new routes to improved materials for technological applications.
The use of total neutron scattering methods, an extension of the powder diffraction method, is being increasingly exploited to study crystalline materials, since the unique combination of Bragg and diffuse scattering can be used to determine both the average structure and the short-range fluctuations from this average picture within a single experiment. With its advanced powder diffractometers, including the recently upgraded POLARIS instrument, ISIS has now established a reputation as the world-leading facility to perform total neutron scattering experiments and provide detailed characterization of disordered crystalline materials.
We are looking to appoint a highly motivated scientist to a two year postdoctoral research position at ISIS. The principal duties are to work with the instrument team on POLARIS to develop software for the analysis of total neutron scattering data and realise the potential of the instrument for world class research on disordered crystalline materials. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to carry out high quality research to probe the role of local structure on the properties of energy materials using this technique, driven by their own ideas and in collaboration with members of the Crystallography Group and Chalmers University, Sweden.
List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain software for the analysis of total scattering data and local structure;
• Conduct high quality research into the local structure of energy materials;
• Write beamtime applications for central facility access (i.e. ISIS and Diamond);
• Provide supervision for students and team members (dependent on experience);
• Disseminate research via publications and conference presentations;
Contacts and Communication
You will interact with visitors, predominantly from higher education institutions but also from industry. You are expected to present your scientific work and represent the group at international conferences and meetings.
