Programme Manager – UK contribution to European Spallation Source

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and engineering.

About the Role

STFC is currently making a major contribution to the European Spallation Source (ESS), a multi-disciplinary research facility currently under construction in Lund, Sweden. This exciting €2 billion project will help shape the future of Neutron science, a vitally important underpinning technology for the UK’s wider scientific endeavour. With a £165M stake in the project the UK is a major player, and is making its contribution through the UK-ESS Programme.

We now have a new opportunity for an experienced Programme Manager, based within STFC’s ISIS facility, a leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. This role will form part of a new project office being established within STFC as part of the UK’s contribution to the ESS project.

Reporting to the Senior Programme Manager, the Programme Manager will be responsible for a programme made up of around 12 projects varying in size up to £40M, through putting appropriate project management structures in place and verifying that sub-projects have appropriate governance structures and procedures, and are proceeding according to plan.

You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the full set of project documentation, including tracking progress against the plans set out in the documents, and preparing progress reports for presentation to the Programme Board, including financial reporting.

Further responsibilities will include:

Working with the Senior Programme Manager, acting as a kingpin in the relationship between STFC and ESS at the programme management level, ensuring any issues that arise on the sub-projects are resolved.
Managing project meetings and reviews, with logistic support
Developing a protocol for document storage compatible with ESS requirements.
Contributing to the management of stakeholders relevant to the programme.
Leading activities to prepare for and manage any audits of the UK-ESS project.
Delegating for the Senior Programme manager at Boards, Reviews etc.
Commenting on requests against the project contingency.
Influencing stakeholders to ensure that all of the projects are kept on track.
Responsibilities will evolve as the project matures from inception to execution.
