ISIS is a world leading facility for scientific research using neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy, with a strong scientific user programme and extensive international links. We support a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology, materials engineering and IT, as well as fundamental physics and chemistry investigations.
The Excitations and Polarized Neutrons group at ISIS are seeking a sandwich student for a 12-month position in the Polarized Neutrons section of the group. The student will work on the development of software for both instrument control and data analysis, primarily connected with the ongoing upgrade of the LET instrument. This instrument is currently used to investigate both atomic and magnetic dynamics, mostly in crystalline materials. The addition of polarized neutron capabilities will both increase the information that can be extracted from these measurements, as well as making the instrument more attractive to new communities. The hardware side of the upgrade is well underway, but software for both instrument control and monitoring, as well as data analysis, is currently lacking. The studentship is expected start with the commissioning of the polarized mode of the instrument, and to culminate with its entry into the user programme.
Full scientific and technical support will be offered to the successful applicant throughout the placement.
LIST OF DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
• Participation in programming and testing control software for polarized instrumentation on LET. • Specification, design, programming and testing of data analysis software for polarized datasets. • Participation in test neutron scattering experiments on LET, and analysis of resulting data. • Integration of the written software into existing instrument control and data analysis packages.
PERSONAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
• The student should be studying for a degree in the physical sciences, and have experience of programming/scripting in python. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are expected.
