Senior IT Support and Systems Engineer

The ISIS IT Infrastructure Services team provides a number of critical IT services to several departments within STFC, including ISIS, the Central Laser Facility (CLF) and the Scientific Computing Department (SCD).

These services include complex mission-critical network infrastructures, back-end systems, application servers and storage infrastructures, large-scale scientific analysis and storage infrastructures and a full IT support service to all its users via a service desk.  Technologies employed cover a wide range of cross-platform Windows and Linux systems from back-end high-capacity and high-resiliency multi-user systems and virtual machine platforms, through to end user desktop systems and devices, all underpinned by modern high-performance networks. 

A small sample of some of the technologies in use includes: Active Directory, Hyper-V failover clusters, OpenStack, large scalable storage systems such as CEPH and modern tiered SANs, deployment and monitoring systems such as SCCM, SCOM, WDS/MDT, Puppet, Quattor, Nagios, Ganglia, LibreNMS, as well as application servers such as IIS/SQL/SharePoint, etc.  The corporate business user desktop infrastructure is based on Windows devices with MS Office and Exchange services.  We are always keen to explore new and emerging technologies and adopt these early where there are clear benefits.

We currently have one vacancy within the team at a senior technical level to help support and develop a number of these backend systems and to provide 2nd and 3rd line support expertise to our user base. You will report to the IT Infrastructure Services Manager.

List of Duties/Work Programme/Responsibilities

  • managing, developing and supporting critical servers and systems such as AD domains, file and application servers, Hyper-V failover clusters and VMs, etc.
  • assisting the ISIS network manager to support and develop the ISIS network infrastructure
  • developing and managing network monitoring systems, such as LibreNMS
  • developing and supporting the desktop deployment systems, images and scripts for use by the frontline service desk staff
  • providing expert 2nd and 3rd line PC and Office system support to our staff and users, working closely with the frontline service desk team to provide a fast, friendly and efficient service
  • supporting all members of the team by writing and developing scripts to automate tasks, particularly in PowerShell and Batch
  • assisting the Linux system manager with systems and application management and support (RedHat and its variants plus scientific applications)
  • ensuring that the security of systems with which you work is maintained in accordance with the requirements of the STFC IT Security Officer by ensuring that all work is undertaken within recognised procedures and working practices
  • continually striving to extend your own technical knowledge in relevant areas by undertaking personal learning and development, reading current relevant publications and exploring new and emerging technologies to identify and develop potential new uses in our environment.

You will have regular contact and communications with a wide range of people, including:

  • peers across the organisation both within and across departments
  • key internal customers and users, including scientists and business staff
  • supported users to advise and resolve IT related issues
  • external suppliers of IT related goods and services for purchasing, repair, support, etc.

Personal Skills and Attributes

We are looking for applications from candidates who ideally have matching skills/knowledge/experience in at least two of the following three key areas:

  • significant knowledge and experience of managing and supporting mission-critical systems and servers in at least several of the key core Microsoft technologies used within the role, such as: Windows Server 2012 R2, Active Directory services, Hyper-V servers, Failover clustering, WDS/MDT image deployment technologies, file and application servers, etc.
  • significant knowledge and experience of supporting and configuring IP networks, network devices and network switches/routers.
  • good working knowledge and experience of running and supporting Linux machines, particularly RedHat based distributions.

In addition to the above, you will also have:

  • excellent knowledge and experience of programming and scripting in a systems support environment, especially in PowerShell and command-line batch scripts
  • very good understanding of modern computer IP networks, switches and routers in general to underpin any of the systems management roles
  • significant knowledge and experience of supporting PC-based computer systems and applications in a formal service desk role within a corporate environment
  • demonstrable ability to rapidly acquire in-depth expertise in computing systems through self-study and be able to apply it the IT systems and support environment
  • excellent customer service skills and attitude
  • exceptional teamwork skills and a real team player.  Keen to always work with, learn from, train and support other members of the team
  • ability to think creatively, to seek and accept change and continuous improvement and a willingness to work to quality standards and procedures
  • high level of drive, enthusiasm and focus on the achievement of goals
  • excellent inter-personal skills, particularly in communication, teamwork, problem-solving and customer relationship management
  • finally, it would be advantageous to have one or more relevant industry standard qualifications, such as MCP, MCSE, RHCSA, RHCSE, ITIL, etc.

Any other Relevant Information

Able bodied enough to unpack and install IT equipment such as servers, etc., following appropriate manual handling procedures (training provided), as this is a key requirement of the job.
