The ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. Due to an imminent retirement a vacancy has arisen within the ISIS Large Scale Structures (LSS) Group. This 20-strong Group develops, operates and supports neutron instruments that are used by academia and industry to investigate a broad range of nanoscale structures and interfaces in research areas such as polymers, colloids, biological systems, thin films and magnetism. The LSS instrument suite currently comprises 4 Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) instruments and 5 Neutron Reflectometry instruments. This vacancy is within the LSS SANS Team.
List of Duties / Work Programme / Responsibilities The new SANS Team member will initially become second responsible for our world-class SANS2d instrument. The position represents an excellent opportunity to develop both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes in the areas of hard/soft condensed matter or the life sciences, through demonstrating and exploiting the capabilities of pulsed source SANS.
In addition, you will also be expected to assist with the development and operation of SANS2d, help out on the other SANS instruments as required, and contribute in other areas, including but not limited to, the advancement of software for data treatment and analysis, the planning for new instrumentation (at ISIS or other neutron centres) or upgrades to existing instruments (for example involving Monte-Carlo simulations of neutron optics), and the design of new and innovative sample environment equipment.
The SANS Team are active contributors to international software initiatives such SasView and CCP-SAS.
Contacts and Communication You will interact extensively with researchers from higher education institutions and industry from both the UK and abroad. Normal duties on SANS2d and the other SANS beam lines will require you to train and work alongside these visitors, and to assist with the interpretation of their SANS data. The working language at ISIS is English.
External representation of ISIS and STFC will range from presenting scientific work at conferences to strategic engagement with key stakeholders. Internally, you will be expected to contribute to, and lead, aspects of the LSS scientific programme, and actively represent the Group in its interactions with science and technology groups within ISIS, STFC and other international neutron facilities.
Personal Skills and Attributes The position requires a PhD and experience and understanding of Small- Angle Neutron or X-ray Scattering techniques. A proven track record in state-of-the-art instrumentation and/or data reduction and analysis is also highly desirable. Good interpersonal and presentation skills are essential.
