About the Role
We have several vacancies for Mechanical Technicians working in the teams that support the production of neutrons, the operation of our suite of instruments, the operation of an extensive range of sample environment equipment and our machine workshops. We have vacancies for Mechanical Technicians and Craft Technicians working in the teams that support the production of neutrons, the operation of our suite of instruments and the operation of an extensive range of sample environment equipment. In these roles, you will develop expertise in running cryogenic plant, working with advanced materials and high speed machines or operating high and low temperature, high pressure and high magnetic field equipment or producing components for use in beamline or experiments from our machine workshops.
Mechanical Technician – Machinist
In this role you will be required to manufacture a wide range of scientific components for ISIS Experimental Operations using both manual and CNC machining methods. You will be required to work to engineering drawings and verbal instructions. You will develop ISIS machining capabilities and work with a wide spectrum of materials ranging from Aluminium to Stainless Steel, Inconel and Super Alloys. In this role you will also be required to work on existing or new build Beamlines, Instruments and Sample Environment equipment when needed.
Mechanical Technician – Instrument Support
You will work as part of a team supporting our existing Neutron and Muon beamlines and building new ones. This will involve installing and building components and sub-assemblies from engineering drawings. You must know how to set up and align installation jigs and fixtures to achieve installation tolerances required by components and assemblies. They must also have the necessary skills required to complete agreed modifications to supplied components and jigs. From time to time you will also be required to use manual and CNC machining techniques. In this role you will also be required to use our CAD system - Solid Edge to produce engineering drawings and view existing drawings and models.
Mechanical Support Technician – Pressure and Furnace Section
We are currently looking to recruit a mechanical technician to work in the Pressure and Furnace Section. The role will be working as part of a small team providing hands on practical support to teams of visiting scientists. This will involve supporting gas handling, high pressure and high temperature experimental systems.
Ideally you would have experience of gas handling or furnace systems however training will be given if required.
You will be an experienced hands-on mechanical Engineer with a good knowledge of workshop practices. You will be familiar with the mechanical properties of materials and have expertise in the assembly, operation and maintenance of electro-mechanical equipment, demonstrating intuitive analytical, diagnostic and problem-solving skills. You will have a strong awareness of Safety, Health and Environment issues in an engineering setting. You will be equally adept working individually or as part of a team, self-motivated and proactive with the ability to apply your initiative. The role will require you to take responsibility for delivering assigned projects to completion. You must have a high level of understanding of engineering drawings and be able to interpret and express technical concepts. You will have good all round communications skills, be able to discuss technical and non-technical issues and be able to keep written records using Microsoft Office.
ISIS operates 24/7, and staff will be expected to take on call-out duties when experiments or equipment fail and may also be asked to undertake overtime.
You will at times be required to work in a radiation area and with active components as a classified worker, and also be able to work in confined spaces and at height.
