ALF is principally used as a support instrument for the excitations group (LET, MAPS and MERLIN) and crystallography group (WISH) to allow users to screen and align crystals, or to co-align arrays of crystals.

It can, however, also be used for other things. New detectors are often tested on ALF, where the large blockhouse and open sample position make setup more straightforward than on other beamlines. Imaging equipment has been used on ALF before being deployed on IMAT, as has chip irradiation apparatus before being used on Chipir. More basic measurements such as neutron transmission can also be performed on ALF.
