Applications are invited for the full-time post of Instrument Scientist on the new state-of-the-art semiconductor irradiation instrument ChipIr. The post-holder will become part of the ChipIr instrument team at ISIS working at the forefront of fast neutron instrument development in the UK and internationally.
ChipIr is one of a new suite of instruments being designed and built on the Second Target Station at the ISIS Facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Once completed it will be one of the world’s best accelerated testing facilities for single-event effects in electronic devices and systems. It will provide the global semiconductor industry with a critical tool to tackle the increasing and problematic effect that fast “atmospheric” neutrons are having on electronics as chips are becoming more complex and being used in more diverse commercial and critical applications.
A key aspect of the role will be commissioning, development and running of the ChipIr instrument. The position represents an excellent opportunity to develop the industrial and commercial use of the instrument and to develop collaborative and personal scientific research programmes exploiting and extending its capabilities. In addition to assisting with the development and running of ChipIr the successful candidate will be expected to lead and assist in the advancement of the exploitation of facilities at ISIS and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for single-event effect testing and radiation-effects work. The successful candidate will contribute to engaging the UK and international radiation-effects communities to promote and develop the new instrument.
1st or 2nd Class degree in the physical or technical science.
A Ph.D. in the physical or technical sciences (or imminent awarding of)
Experience of data analysis techniques, software and programming
Working knowledge of of or more the the standard computing languages used at ISIS (Python, Fortran, C, C++, Visual Basic, Labview)
Familiarity with fast neutron irradiation techniques and detection
The ability to pursue and independent research programme
Desirable: Direct experience of neutron techniques at a neutron facility
Knowledge of fast neutron dosimetry
Knowledge of solid state devices for radiation detection
Knowledge of GEANT4, MCNP, FLUKA
Knowledge of application of irradiation techniques to Single Event Effect studies
