A visualisation of water with a hydroxide ion in the centre

Water molecules have one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. This picture shows part of a water molecule in the centre with the oxygen coloured red. The blue ‘tea-cup’ shapes indicate where the neighbouring water molecules will be located.

Professor Alan Soper was part of the team who created this image to explain their work on water. He talks a little bit more about this picture and the work it represents.
