How Accessible This Website Is

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • documents may not be fully accessible to screen reader software
  • pages sometimes have unhelpful ARIA labels and incorrectly set properties
  • Some text boxes do not have WCAG-Compliant contrast with their background
  • Some images used may not have alt texts set

Enforcement Procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the 'accessibility regulations'). If you're not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website's accessibility

STFC is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance Status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-Accessible Content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

When we publish new content we'll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Some text on the site does not have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 with the background. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum).

SharePoint Components

We do not have direct control over many of the user controls on the site. SharePoint components may not have all properties that are valuable to assistive technologies, like ARIA labels, and textbox labels. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2. At current, we have not found ways to correct this without changing the underlying technology.

User-Created Content

The majority of content on this site is created by users outside of the ISIS Computing Division. As a result, there are a large number of documents and articles that may not be compliant with various WCAG 2.1 guidelines.

We are actively working to ensure as much of this content is as accessible as possible. If you are having difficulties viewing content on the site, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We plan to create and maintain guidelines and advice to best enable users to create accessible content.
