Working at ISIS is an excellent opportunity to develop collaborative and personal scientific research programmes and to help shape the future of neutron science. We have a range of permanent and fixed term positions available. We are an interdisciplinary research centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory co-located with the Diamond Light Source and the Research Complex at Harwell.

In addition to the competitive salary, an excellent index-linked pension scheme and generous leave allowance are offered.

Closing date: 2 January 2012. Interviews will be held in February 2012.

All applications must be handled through the RCUK recruitment portal.

Complete information is available through the STFC guidance pages to RCUK Shared Services recruitment portal

Large scale structures

Advanced spin labelling techniques (Offspec: IRC36475, Larmor: IRC36359)

Spin labelling techniques offer exciting new possibilities for neutron enabled science. At ISIS the Offspec instrument delivers spin labelling capability and is to be complemented by the Larmor instrument in the second phase of instrument construction on the second target station. To support this ambitious science programme in reflection, small angle scattering and diffraction we require both a permanent and fixed term position for the Offspec and Larmor instruments respectively. For an informal discussion about this post, please contact Dr Robert Dalgliesh.

Nanomagnetism and superconductivity researcher (IRC36455)

A fixed term vacancy exists to contribute to the scientific programme within the nanomagnetism research group. The group has strong collaborative research projects in a wide range of magnetism and superconductivity. The post is focussed on exploiting neutron (and complementary) techniques to provide a quantitative nanoscale understanding of magnetic and superconducting materials. For an informal discussion about this post, please contact Prof  Sean Langridge.

New tools for the analysis of protein solution structure (IRC36496)

A fixed term vacancy exists to contribute to the development of analysis tools that exploit small angle neutron scattering as a tool for structural biology. The biology group requires the development and application of robust and effective analysis techniques to fully exploit the high quality data. The applicant will have demonstrated skills in structural analysis and modelling of proteins and a familiarity with one or more programming languages. Experience of analysing small angle scattering data or the development and deployment of web services would be an advantage. For an informal discussion of the post please contact Dr Cameron Neylon .

Crystallography

Crystallography Group Leader (IRC36435)

The Crystallography Group at ISIS delivers and enables a world class scientific programme across a broad range of materials science. We are looking for a highly motivated and independent scientist to provide scientific and strategic leadership to the Crystallography Group, to shape the development of neutron crystallography, to deliver an international acknowledged research programme and to contribute to wider STFC issues at a senior level.  For an informal discussion about this post, please contact Prof Sean Langridge .

Chemical crystallographer (IRC35435)

A permanent vacancy exists to develop the chemical crystallography programme at ISIS. The successful candidate will collaborate with members of the Crystallography Group to provide a high standard of scientific support with a focus on chemical crystallography. The position offers an excellent opportunity to develop a personal scientific programme in the area of chemical crystallography. A strong background in chemical crystallography using neutron and X-ray, single crystal and powder diffraction is essential. Further information can be obtained by contacting Prof. Sean Langridge .

Experimental scientist for neutron imaging (IRC35936)

A fixed-term vacancy exists to contribute to the development of the first UK neutron imaging beamline Imat at ISIS. The applicant will be familiar with neutron imaging techniques. The position offers the opportunity to develop a personal scientific programme in a materials science subject, by using neutron imaging or neutron diffraction techniques. Further information can be obtained by contacting Dr. Winfried Kockelmann .

Engineering materials scientist (IRC35236)

A permanent vacancy exists for a scientist to support the user programme of the Engin-x neutron strain scanner at ISIS. A strong background in strain analysis using neutron or x-ray methods is essential. Experience in developing neutron instrumentation components and data analysis software will be an advantage. For an informal discussion about this post please contact Dr. Winfried Kockelmann .

Disordered materials

Nimrod instrument scientist (IRC35815)

A permanent vacancy exists for a scientist to join the Disordered Materials Group and support the operation of the newly constructed near and intermediate range order diffractometer, Nimrod. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop collaborative and personal research programmes in the area of atomic and nano-scale structure of liquids and complex materials. For an informal discussion about this post please contact Dr Daniel Bowron.

Neutron spectroscopy

Experimental scientist in catalysis and nanoscience (IRC36016)

A fixed-term vacancy exists to support and develop our science and instrumentation programme on the Tosca neutron spectrometer in the areas of chemical catalysis and/or nanoscience. This post represents an excellent opportunity to create both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes exploiting the capabilities of neutron scattering in key areas of chemistry and materials research. For an informal discussion about this post please contact Prof Felix Fernandez-Alonso.

Computational scientist (IRC36019)

A fixed-term vacancy exists to develop our science and instrumentation programme on the neutron spectrometers Osiris and Iris. Parallel to ongoing instrument developments, the post holder will develop and integrate modern computer modeling paradigms into existing data-analysis tools. This post represents an excellent opportunity to develop both collaborative and personal scientific research programmes exploiting the capabilities of neutron scattering in key areas of chemistry and materials research. For an informal discussion about this post please contact Prof Felix Fernandez-Alonso.
