John Webster undertook his PhD at the University of Bristol between 1984 and 1989, working on a project entitled ‘Neutron Scattering and Monte Carlo Studies on the Adsorbed State of a Random Copolymer’. Before that, he completed an MSc in Surface Chemistry and Colloid Science at the University of Bristol (1983–1984) and earned a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester (1980–1983). Following a postdoctoral position at Bristol University, John joined the ISIS facility in 1991, where he has made significant contributions to the field of reflectometry. He played a key role in the reconstruction of the Crisp instrument, the construction and commissioning of Surf, and the design, build and commissioning of the Inter reflectometer. John is currently the Science Group Leader for Reflectometry at ISIS.
