The ENGIN-X positioner is a high capacity translation and rotation stage which forms the basis of the instrument's spatially resolved diffraction capabilities.

Specifications:

Max. specimen weight: 1T
Horizontal motion: 2 orthogonal axes (x and y), each with ± 250mm
Vertical motion (z): 600mm travel
Rotation about vertical axis (w): 370° (click here for further rotational capability)
Nominal translational accuracy: 10mm/100mm (0.5T load)

Sample mounting:

The positioner is equipped with a three tiered "wedding cake" standard breadboard mount:

TierTop face dimensionsHeightVertical distance of top face from beam levelBreadboard pattern on top face
Bottom 40x40cm20cm-260mm to -596mm25mm spaced grid, of M6 (topped with 8mm deep, 8mm diameter dowel holes), M12 and M16 threads
Middle 25x25cm20cm-60mm to -576mm25mm spaced grid, of M6 (topped with 8mm deep, 8mm diameter dowel holes), M12 and M16 threads
Top 12x12cm20cm+140mm to -556mm 25mm spaced grid, M6 threads (topped with 8mm deep, 8mm diameter dowel holes)

Small to medium-sized samples can be mounted reproducibly on these breadboards using a LOCOMETRIC Precision Sample Mounting System, as developed at Salford University and FaME38 at the ILL.

For very large samples, it may be advantageous to bolt directly to the positioner's top plate without using any tiers of the wedding cake.
