Muon spectroscopy measure-by-courier service using the Emu and MuSR instruments


Muon Xpress Access to beamtime at ISIS is suitable for:

  • Initial characterization of samples
  • Feasibility checks on samples for future muon experiments

Muon Xpress measurements will be automated to follow a pre-agreed experiment plan and are unlikely to be allocated more than 5 hours of beamtime. Measurements will be run on either the Musr or Emu instruments and scheduled when time is available. Users do not need to attend ISIS for the measurement.

Examples of measurements suitable for this mode of access include:


Time required

Characterization of signal at one temperature (1.5 < T < 300 K)

1 – 3 hrs

Finding the nature of a previously determined transition (coarse T-scan)

3 – 5 hrs

Finding diamagnetic / muonium fraction (300 K or coarse T-scan)

1 – 5 hrs

Repolarization curve (B < 0.5 T)

1 – 3 hrs


A PDF summarizing the measurement (typically 1 page A4) should include:

  • A plan of the proposed measurements (including any necessary calibrations)
  • Time requirements for each part of the measurements
  • Information on the sample characterization already carried out

Sample safety

Full details of the sample to be run must be provided by the user to the instrument scientist so that correct handling procedures, or any other safety-related matters, can be assessed and so that the instrument scientist is fully aware of any hazards of the sample.

Standard sample holders

Sample holders appropriate for a variety of samples can be supplied and only sample holders agreed with the instrument scientist before the beamtime will be used. The instrument scientist will contact the user to agree on the sample holder and mounting procedure once the proposal has been received.

Data output

Unprocessed data will be provided without interpretation unless analysis is requested, in which case basic analysis will be done (extent of any analysis to be agreed by the instrument scientist with the user before the beamtime is used).

Beamtime limits

Groups are likely to be capped at 5 hours per cycle, and time will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. A maximum total of 10 hours per group per 12 months is anticipated.


A short report will be expected after each Xpress measurement. This will be submitted to ISIS Facility Access Panel 6 (Muons) for review, via the User Office.

Data Policy

Data collected using Xpress are subject to the normal ISIS policy regarding publication of scientific results, and bibliometric criteria, among others, will be used to assess the productivity of the scheme.
