What do you do at ISIS?

I am working on making a platform that will verify alarms in the synchrotron. In case there is an emergency, like a fire, the crew will be able to see it on the platform that I'm designing and tend to it. Another part of my project involves building a machine learning (ML) model in a team that assesses the behaviours of the targets. The ML models pick up on the behaviour of the synchrotron. The more information you feed the system, the more it learns. Over time, the technique will be able to pick up on any abnormal behaviour in the target area.

What route did you take to get to where you are now?

I'm studying physics at the University of Manchester, and I was looking around at a Careers Fair and noticed STFC's booth. When I went to go talk to the person on the stand, they seemed enthusiastic about all the cool science at the facility, so I decided to apply for a placement year.

What else have you been involved in?

I am one of the software engineers that's a part of the STFC-led team that's been given funding to produce low-cost ventilators for low and middle-income countries. Outside of my placement responsibilities, I get to work with a microcontroller to make part of the ventilator that can be used for patients with COVID-19.

What do you like most about your job?

I think the best part of working at STFC is getting know people! They're all very nice and willing to help others. During lockdown, I've joined a Games lunch on Wednesdays – where I gets to 'meet' and socialize with my co-workers.
