The electronic structure problem for many-body quantum systems is of central importance in chemistry and solid state physics, with applications ranging from biology to material science. I will present rigorous estimates for the rate of decay of the off-diagonal entries in spectral projectors for Hamiltonians corresponding to gapped systems, like insulators and semiconductors.
