The PPMS-9 is an open architecture, variable temperature and field system designed to perform a variety of scripted and automated magnetic and physical property measurements.

General Specifications​​​​

  • Capable of 24/7 continuous operation
  • Measurement temperature range of 1.8 to 400 K with measurement sweep rate of 0.01 to 10 K/min
  • Continuous Low-Temperaure Control (CLTC) for precise and uninterrupted operation below 4.2 K
  • Applied field strength of ± 9 ​Tesla
  • Field uniformity of ±0.01 % over 5.5 cm

Heat Capacity

The heat capacity option for the PPMS will run fully automated relaxation heat capacity measurements under high-vacuum.

  • 1.8 to 400 K temperature range
  • Will take samples from 1 to 500 mg
  • Resolution of 10 nJ/K at 2 K
  • He-3 refrigerator for temperatures below 1.8 K (minimum >0.4 K)


The AC measurement system (ACMS) can perform both AC susceptibility and DC magnetization measurements without changing between hardware. A single automated measurement system is capable of both. The VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer) option allows for SQUID-style measurements on shorter time scales. 

  • Temperature range of 1.8 to 400 K
  • AC frequencies from 10 Hz to 10 kHZ and field amplitudes from 2 mOe to 15 Oe
  • DC magnetization measurement sensitivity range of 2.5 x 10-5 to 5 emu
  • AC susceptibility measurement sensitivity of 2 x 10-8 emu

AC Transport

The AC Transport option (ACT) supports four different automated electrical transport modes: AC resistivity, five-wire Hall effect, I-V curves and critical current measurements.

  • Two samples can be loaded simultaneously
  • Current range of 10 μA to 2 A
  • Sensitivity of 1 nV at 1 kHz
  • Operational frequency range of 1 Hz to 1 kHz
  • He-3 refrigerator for temperatures below 1.8 K (minimum >0.4 K)

DC Resistivity

This option adds resistance bridge capabilities to the instrument providing four independent channels for van der Pauw and four-wire resistance measurements.

  • Up to three samples can be loaded and measured simultaneously
  • Current range of 5 nA to 5 mA
  • 20 nV sensitivity
  • He-3 refrigerator for temperatures below 1.8 K (minimum >0.4 K)
