Ionising Radiation produced at ISIS is subject to many physical and administrative controls.

For ISIS users, our rules and operating procedures are designed so that the doses you may receive are kept to less than 1mSv per year.

All work with Ionising Radiation is carried out under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999. For ISIS this means that we apply the following control and measurement procedures to our work:

1.   Local Rules

2.   Systems of Work

3.   Personal Dosimetry

The induced radioactivity section of the ERA document gives an estimate of the likely radioactivity of the sample and what length of time is required for this activity to decay to a safe level. The sample will be put in one of three categories: RED, ORANGE or GREEN. Samples should be checked and treated appropriately.
