The ESS, based in Lund, Sweden, shares a common interest with ISIS in the development of various technologies related to pulsed spallation neutron sources, as well as in the fostering and development of the European neutron community. The two facilities signed a similar agreement back in 2014. The new agreement was mutually signed by ESS Director General Helmut Schober and ISIS Director Roger Eccleston and will be valid for the next 10 years.

Under the agreement ESS and ISIS will establish Cooperative Research Programs to develop particular areas of expertise, exchange  scientific and technical knowledge, research and technical staff, and specific research areas of common interest.
Cooperative Research Programmes may include (but not be limited to)
•    Instrument Engineering
•    Instrument Design and Simulation
•    Neutron Choppers
•    Neutron Shielding
•    Neutron Optics and Neutron PolarisationTarget and Moderators
•    Electrical Engineering
•    Motion Control
•    Data Acquisition Electronics
•    Detectors
