The value of ISIS beamtime, awarded to UK PI's through peer review (ISIS Facility Access Panels), can be included as in-kind income by University Departments (Units of Assessment) in their submission to the REF2021 exercise. This page gives further information on this process.

ISIS provides, on an annual basis, UK PI's with a 'bank statement' showing the number of ISIS beam days they have been awarded for the year and the in-kind value of these days.

This information is also submitted into the REF process. The in-kind value of ISIS beam days awarded to UK PIs has been given to UKRI centre who make this available to HEIs. This information will be made available to the REF contact at each institution. It is up to the REF contact at each institution to manage and distribute this information so that it is available to individual units of assessment (departments) for inclusion in their REF submissions.

If you would like to know who your REF institutional contact is, so that you can check how they are using the information on facility awards, please go to https://www.ref.ac.uk/contact/.

The value of ISIS beam time received by PIs should be used by departments in Section 4: Environment Data, within Research Income-in-kind (REF4c).  Further information on this can be found on pages 79-80 of the REF Guidance on Submissions.

This information is submitted at the unit of assessment level, not at the individual PI level.  This means that, for PI's and Co-I's on ISIS proposals who are at the same unit of assessment, it does not matter whether the time awarded is counted as that of the PI or shared with co-I's.  Where PI and co-Is are at different units of assessment, they would need to come to agreement on the division of the in-kind value between them.

It may be possible for us to generate the total award of ISIS beamtime over the REF period for a unit of assessment (department).  If you would like this, please contact Andrew Kaye at ISIS.  We are not planning to automatically generate this information, as, in general, we do not know for each department who the information should be sent to.  However, we can deal with individual requests.

Please contact Philip King at ISIS for further information on ISIS beamtime and the REF.
