SANDALS 25th Anniversary Meeting, 6 – 7 January  2015

December 2014 will be 25 years since the first neutrons appeared on SANDALS - 4th December 1989 at 23:28:16, to be precise!
This milestone was achieved after several frantic weeks of construction effort to build the instrument blockhouse, and install the vacuum tank, the “get lost” pipe and the (3) detector modules.

According to STFC ePubs, there are some 379 publications that have since appeared related to the use of SANDALS, and the majority of these report the results of individual beam time experiments.

To celebrate this occasion we are holding a Disordered Materials Science Meeting, 6-7 January 2015, at The Cosener's House, to which you are cordially invited.

Topics to be discussed include the structure of water and aqueous solutions, the application of diffraction methods to study ice in outer Space, ionic liquids, the structure of glasses, and how neutrons can inform us about the way molecular fluids arrange themselves near surfaces.

A number of slots have been reserved for contributed talks, as well as a poster session on the first day, so please encourage your students and post-docs to apply! However places will be limited, so early registration is advised.

Confirmed speakers include Laurent Cormier (Paris), Neal Skipper (UCL), Helen Fraser (Open University), Maria Antonietta Ricci (Roma Tre), and John Holbrey (Belfast). The meeting, including meals and accommodation, will be free for UK based researchers. Outline agreement has been obtained with Proc. Roy. Soc. A to publish a series of papers associated with the meeting.

Registration, which will be on a first-come first-serve basis, can be achieved by going to http://wwwisis2.isis.rl.ac.uk/useroffice/SANDALS_EPSR/Register.asp.

EPSR Workshop, 8 – 9 January 2015

Following the SANDALS meeting, we will be holding another EPSR (Empirical Potential Structure Refinement) workshop at The Cosener's House, 8 – 9 January 2015.

This consists of a series of tutorials on using EPSR, followed by opportunities for participants to practice under supervision, either on the supplied worked examples or on their own data.

It is important that participants provide their own laptops, and that these have a Windows operating system installed, as well as the Java Runtime Environment. Linux and OS-X operating systems can also be accommodated, but for these a working gfortran compiler is required, as well as the Java Runtime Environment.

The workshop is aimed primarily at those new to EPSR, but others requiring some refresher training are welcome to apply.

Registration is via the same website as for the SANDALS 25th Anniversary meeting: http://wwwisis2.isis.rl.ac.uk/useroffice/SANDALS_EPSR/Register.asp.

For more details please contact Alan Soper or Chloe Johnson.
