Endeavour update newsletter Autumn 2025

03 Nov 2025

This newsletter features highlights from the instrument upgrades that are already underway. Super MuSR and HRPD-X are currently planned to be ready for the user programme in the first half of 2028. Wish-II, Mushroom and Sandals-2 are now in the detailed design phase, with Osiris+ and Tosca+ likely to follow during 2026/27. The video below was taken at the ground-breaking ceremony for the building that will house the new HRPD-X instrument.

People of Endeavour

Continuing our series introducing the staff behind Endeavour, we speak to Rhea Stewart, an instrument scientist on the muon beamlines and part of the team developing Super MuSR.

Super MuSR component testing

High voltage testing is underway for the precursors to the Super MuSR spin rotator electrodes. The team are using a simplified version of the spin rotator for testing the setup and components. The magnets for the spin rotators and quadrupoles are currently being manufactured. They will be raising the voltage up to +200 kV, and testing to see if there are any faults that cause electrical discharges. The electrodes need to be extremely clean and are tested under vacuum. Therefore, all the assembly has been done in a clean room tent, set up in the Super MuSR pre-build area. The electrodes for the Super MuSR pulse slicer have arrived on site at RAL for testing and mass manufacture of the detector tiles continues, with more in-beam testing due later in October to test the final tile sizes.

HRPD decant complete and R69 demolition underway

The building that housed the HRPD instrument for over 40 years has been demolished, and the ground broken on the build for its replacement. The new building will house a precision-engineered instrument hall, control room and laboratory.

The HRPD team have created a newsletter that features more detailed progress updates and images, sent out via the ISIS user community news. You can read the latest issue online.
