Osiris analyser ready for installation

19 Dec 2025

The Osiris instrument is being upgraded with the addition of a silicon analyser, which will measure small energy transfers with high precision and provide new information about the mobility of ions, atoms and molecules on a longer timescale.

Access to longer relaxation times will provide new opportunities to strengthen the science programme in ionic and proton conduction in complex media, or molecular transport in porous materials and catalysts of industrial relevance, which quite often suffer from present limits.

The silicon analyser crystals have now been installed on the analyser towers (left), the collimator has been delivered (below, left), and the detectors are being assembled and tested (below, right).

This means that the full installation can start during this Winter shutdown, with commissioning expected in May/June 2026.
