A year in reflection : Industrial Placement students share their experiences

After an unforgettable year at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, it's time to say goodbye to this amazing cohort of Industrial Placement students. They've spent the last 12 months learning, growing, taking on new opportunities, and making a real impact across the facility. As they wrap up their placements and look ahead to the next chapter, we caught up with some of them to hear about their experiences. Read on to discover some of their highlights, biggest takeaways, favourite memories.
Michael Ross
University of Glasgow
Deuteration Chemist
As a Deuteration Chemist, Mike is developing methods for the synthesis of deuterated compounds that are used in experiments at ISIS. These contain deuterium, which is an isotope of hydrogen. His main project was focused on making fully deuterated 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), with a few side projects involving the synthesis of other materials and the recycling of D2O.
My favourite part of the placement is probably all of the problem-solving that it involved. DME is particularly hard to purify, so a lot of my time was spent developing a method of extracting it from a reaction mixture and purifying it to a high standard. It took a while, but when the method finally worked, it felt amazing.

What was the biggest challenge you faced and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge was probably the sheer amount I needed to learn at the start. There was a wide range of things that I didn’t know much about, especially starting in a new lab, but thankfully, the team were incredibly helpful (and patient). My first few days involved researching, and with the team helping me out and showing me around, I figured things out fairly quickly.
What achievement are you most proud of during your placement?
Definitely the final design of my experiment. The first few months were spent making different compounds I could use, where I tweaked my reactions and tried different methods of purification. The final method used lots of little bits that I learned from the different things I’d tried, so when it all came together, it was amazing.
Rohini Gupta
University of Sussex
Science Communicator
Rohini works with the ISIS Communications team, where she helps share the variety of scientific research taking place at ISIS. Her role involves writing science highlights and staff case studies, creating graphics and content for social media platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn, producing monthly internal newsletters, and managing e-publications.
My favourite part of the placement has been meeting and learning from a variety of researchers, scientists, and staff. Working with people has genuinely been one of the best parts because I got to interact with so many passionate people. I really enjoyed taking their research and writing about it in a way that was easy to understand and engaging for a wider audience.

What was the biggest challenge you faced and how did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges was starting a science communication role as a International Business Management student. At first, I was nervous because I didn’t have a science background, but over time I realised that I was able to learn quickly and adapt. This experience helped me step outside my comfort zone and made me much more confident in my abilities.
What achievement are you most proud of during your placement?
One of my main goals was to make complex scientific research easier for non-specialist audiences to understand, and I’m proud to have published ten science highlights.
I’ve also gained a lot of experience in content creation and posted more than 90 posts on our socials. I also supported the student meeting 2025 which helped improve my organisation skills.
Sujaya Shrestha
University of Warwick
Scientific Software Engineer
Sujaya contributes to the development, maintenance, and improvement of SasView, an open-source application for the analysis of small-angle scattering data. His role involves balancing new feature development with maintaining the software, ensuring that SasView remains robust, user-friendly, and sustainable. He works within an international team of developers, researchers and users, contributing to collaborative discussions and aligning development work with user needs and scientific priorities.
A year in the real world, gradually stepping into bigger shoes, with greater responsibilities, has been a much needed and thrilling experience for me. Moving to a new place, in such a massive organisation, amidst hundreds of new people was exciting, but also quite daunting. The warm and cheerful people I met along the way, and having a network of placement students whom I could relate to and confide in were what made my time here memorable.
Sujaya's favourite part of the placement
What was the biggest challenge you faced and how did you overcome it?
When I was given my first bug to squash, I felt completely lost in the tens of thousands of lines of code. After an afternoon of stumbling around, I managed to find the one mischievous line and patch it. It took me months to get comfortable with the codebase. I eventually learned and accepted that it was not possible to grasp the entire software, and every day working on it would be a new learning experience.
What achievement are you most proud of during your placement?
I am particularly proud of the new features I added to the software, which were received so enthusiastically by the other developers and users. It also puts into perspective how much I have grown and became comfortable with working with such an immense project.
Isha Rajadhyax
Imperial College London
Bio-deuteration Support Scientist
Isha has been working in the ISIS Biolabs, with her role involving the deuteration of biomolecules, specifically proteins, using neutron scattering to obtain information. She has also spent a large chunk of her placement culturing bacteria to get it to express a specific protein.
I have really enjoyed being able to work in the lab and drive my own project because it's something I'm really interested in and the placement has just given me the ability to problem solve and look into the different ways I could move forward in my experiment to achieve a specific goal and I think that has been really interesting. I also get to spend a lot of time in the lab and I like that.
Isha's favourite part of the placement
What was the biggest challenge you faced and how did you overcome it?
I wouldn’t say there was a single big one, more that I have faced many little challenges. For me specifically it would be, for example, why is my bacteria not growing? Why is it not making the protein I wanted? What can I do to push this a bit further or to increase the yield? I faced many little challenges where it was like, this is not working and I don’t know why. I overcame these by looking back into the research, discussing it with my manager and kind of just learning more information around the specific problem I was trying to solve to try.
What achievement are you most proud of during your placement?
I think I was quite proud of my poster presentation at the conference for users of neutrons and muons, because I put a lot of effort into it and it gave me the opportunity to present what I was doing up until this point in front of quite a lot of people, which was really exciting. I felt like I was being able to represent my department at a big conference was nice. I was also extremely honoured to have been awarded the Student Poster prize for it.
