Crisp is the original neutron reflectometer instrument at ISIS and was designed for high resolution studies of a wide range of interfacial phenomena.

It is one of the best instruments in the world for spin-polarised neutron scattering.  It was designed for: 

  • Spintronics
  • Magnetic nanostructures and patterned media.
  • Complex biological layered structures, eg complex soap films.
  • Fundamental magnetism and superconductivity.
  • Complex polymer films.

Crisp, unlike its sister instrument Surf, can also perform polarised neutron reflectivity (PNR) measurements with full polarisation analysis. This may be used for the in depth study of magnetic structure within thin films.

The instrument is highly automated, allowing reproducible measurements to be made with high precision, and the sample geometry is horizontal to facilitate the study of liquid surfaces. There is also overhead crane access for the installation of large items of sample environment. Please see the sample e​nvironment page for the list of available sample environments.
