Sample Preparation

As well as the more specialist equipment found in the laboratory, there are a number of other items and equipment more suited to general lab work and sample preparation.

Most of the items that you need, specific to individual pieces of kit, should be located within the vicinity of the equipment.

The laboratory also contains:

  • Fume cupboard
  • Diamond circular cutting saw
  • Pellet press
  • Wire bonder
  • Soldering iron
  • 5 decimal point balance 

Two optical microscopes are also available, both outfitted with PC-linked image capture capabilities. Users are welcome to visit the laboratory just to use these if need be.

Also under the care of the laboratory team is a high-temperature furnace for preparing fused beads from sample material to be used in the Epsilon3 X-ray fluoresce​nce spectrometer. The PANalytical Eagon 2 can run a variety of user-defined or pre-programmed heating 'recipies' at temperatures up to 1200 °C. Manufacturer's details can be found here.
