3d view of the proposed secondary spectrometer upgradeTosca+ is a performance upgrade in neutron vibrational spectroscopy that will be achieved through analyser improvements.

Technique: Inelastic neutron scattering
Contact: Adrien Perrichon

Why do we need Tosca+?
Tosca+ forms the next generation of neutron vibrational spectroscopy for catalysis and energy materials studies, particularly for industry. The unique information provided will support the UK’s ambition for Net Zero in a wide range of areas and across a broad range of technology readiness levels. Current users include Johnson Matthey, Evonik, Toyota, Sasol UK, Lucite, Huntsman Chemicals, General Motors and Qinetiq, also the EPSRC-funded UK Catalysis Hub.

Technical success criteria:
• At  least  a  tenfold  increase  in  the  detected  intensity,  achieved  by  increasing the solid angle covered by the analyser, plus improving the transmission of analysed neutrons through the beryllium filter and plus improving the neutron capture efficiency of the detector system
• a tenfold decrease of the transmission of high energy neutrons through the beryllium filter, in order to fully convert the tenfold gain into a tenfold SNR increase. This can be achieved through the careful design of the geometry of the Be filter and optimisation of the spacing between its neutron absorbing blades
• keeping the energy resolution degradation to a minimum, with a target value for the energy resolution equal to or less than about 1% of the incident energy at an energy transfer of  hω= 150 meV. This can be achieved through careful positioning and orientation of the PG tiles constituting the analyser.
• A new sample changer to enable good use of the higher data intensities
