Muon Training School

The aim of the Muon Spectroscopy Training School is to provide a practical training course for PhD students and post-doctoral researchers on the use of muons for research.

The last ISIS practical Muon Training School was be held on the 18-22 March 2024 at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. This residential school offered participants the chance to attend a range of lectures and workshops delivered by experienced researchers, along with the opportunity to perform hands on muon experiments at the ISIS pulsed muon source.

Muons are a valuable and versatile probe of condensed matter. The µSR (muon spin rotation / relaxation / resonance) spectroscopic techniques are used to investigate magnetic, superconducting, semiconducting, molecular, ionic and metallic systems. We encourage all PhD students and post-doctoral researchers who are interested in learning more about muon techniques to apply. Selection of participants will be made based on applicants demonstrating their motivation to attend the school via our online application form.

The cost of the school, food and accommodation, as well as reasonable travel expenses, will be covered for participants from the UK and ISIS partner nations (Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, and Sweden). There will also be funding available to cover the cost of the school and food for participants from other nations.
