The PPMS System-DynaCool in the Materials Characterisation Laboratory

Overview

The PPMS System-DynaCool is an open architecture, variable temperature and field system designed to perform a variety of scripted and automated magnetic and physical property measurements. As the next generation PPMS, this system runs without the use of liquid cryogens.

Common Research Applications

  • Magnetic properties: magnetic DC and AC susceptibility, magnetometry

  • Thermal properties: heat capacity, thermal transport, cryo-FMR

  • Electric properties: DC and AC resistance, electro transport

Measurement Options

Heat Capacity

The Heat Capacity option for the PPMS will run fully automated relaxation heat capacity measurements under high-vacuum.

  • Measures sample masses from 1 to 500 mg

  • Resolution of 10 nJ/K at 2 K

  • Dilution Refrigerator for temperatures below 1.8 K (minimum 50 mK)

  • Heat Capacity brochure

AC Susceptibility

The AC Measurement System (ACMS) option can perform both AC susceptibility and DC magnetisation measurements without changing between hardware. A single automated measurement system is capable of both.

  • AC frequencies from 10 Hz to 10 kHz and field amplitudes from 0.05 Oe to 15 Oe

  • AC susceptibility measurement sensitivity of 1 x 10-8 emu at 10 kHz

  • DC magnetisation measurement sensitivity of 5 x 10-6 emu

  • Dilution Refrigerator for temperatures below 1.8 K (minimum 50 mK)

  • ACMS brochure

Vibrating Sample Magnetometry

The Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM) option enables magnetisation measurements as a function of temperature or magnetic field.

  • Oscillation amplitude of 0.1 mm to 5 mm

  • Oscillation frequency of 10 Hz to 60 Hz

  • Noise levels of <6 × 10-7 emu at 300 K

  • VSM brochure

DC Resistivity

The DC Resistivity option adds resistance bridge capabilities to the instrument providing four independent channels for van der Pauw and four-wire resistance measurements.

  • Up to three samples can be loaded and measured simultaneously

  • Resistance range of 10 μΩ to 5 MΩ in a standard 4-probe configuration

  • Current range of 2 nA to 8 mA

  • 15 nV sensitivity

  • He-3 refrigerator for temperatures below 1.8 K (minimum >0.4 K)

  • DC Resistance brochure

Thermal Transport

The Thermal Transport Option (TTO) measures a sample's thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity simultaneously with a single sequence command for characterisation of thermoelectric materials.

  • Automated calculation of the thermoelectric figure of merit

  • Thermal conductivity estimated dynamic range of 0.1 to 250 W/m.K at 300 K

  • Seebeck coefficient estimated dynamic range of 1 μV/K to 1 V/K

  • Electrical resistivity estimated dynamic range of 10 μΩ to 5 MΩ

  • TTO brochure

Electrical Transport

The Electrical Transport Option (ETO) enables AC resistance measurements over a wide range of resistance values and sample types.

  • Measures resistances of 10 μΩ – 10 MΩ in a standard 4-probe configuration

  • Measures resistances of 2 MΩ – 5 GΩ in the high-impedance 2-probe configuration

  • Automated I-V curve collection can be used to screen for ohmic contacts

  • ETO brochure

Dilution Refrigerator

The Dilution Refrigerator option for the PPMS allows access to a temperature range of 4 K down to 50 mK.

  • Base temperature (50 mK) reached in approximately 5 hours from 300 K

  • Compatible with Heat Capacity, DC Resistivity and AC Susceptibility

  • Dilution Refrigerator brochure

Ferromagnetic Resonance

The CryoFMR probe enables measurement of the Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) response of a material at variable temperatures and sample orientations parallel or perpendicular to the DC field.

Pressure Cell

The Transport Pressure Cell option for the PPMS enables up to two 4-probe electrical transport measurements at high pressures up to 2.7 GPa.

  • Maximum sample pressure of 2.7 GPa

  • Maximum applied load of 3.0 GPa
