Steve Wakefield, ISIS Deputy Director and Head of Operations
Steve joined the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in 2001 to manage beamline engineering operations and installations in Target Station 1 and to run the neutron chopper team. He took a lead role in bringing the first suite of ISIS Target Station 2 instruments into operation and in 2015 became Head of the ISIS Experimental Operations Division with responsibility across the facility for target, beamline and sample environment operations, user laboratories and experiment safety management before taking on his current role as Deputy Director and Head of ISIS Operations. He is a member of the European Spallation Source Environment, Safety and Health Advisory Committee.
Steve studied Natural Sciences and Chemical Engineering at Jesus College, Cambridge. He spent 10 years working in the food manufacturing industry in the UK, the USA and Canada as a Process Instrumentation and Controls Engineer, developing and implementing advanced measurement and control techniques to improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency. His role in the USA included leading the design, development, installation and commissioning of the process instrumentation systems for a newly built manufacturing facility. He is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
